Plot Summary: Call Me By Your Name is a romance/drama film which stars Timothee Chalamet (Elio) and Armie Hammer (Oliver). Set during the summer of 1983 in Lombardy Italy, Oliver travels from America to stay in Elio’s 17th-century villa as an intern for Elio’s father. The two meet and soon after begin a complicated and unexpected love story that forms throughout the summer.
Scene selection: We decided to choose the scene that stands out visually and was emotional and important. The scene is near the end of the movie where Elio and Oliver have a tear-jerking goodbye at the train station. The scene is around 3 minutes long.
Educational reason: Call Me By Your Name demonstrates the art of filmmaking. An educational reason for proposing this film in class is because of how beautiful the cinematography is used and how you are able to gain so much knowledge for filmmaking from the movie. The angles chosen, cameras used, timing and coloring all aline perfectly. It is a great film to watch for someone who is interesting in filmmaking because there are so many layers you can unfold during the duration of the movie. Ever since this movie I have been more interested in filmmaking and cinematography, it intrigued me so much that when I watch a movie I can't help but dig deeper and notice all the little things in the film. In this one three minute clip, you can learn so much that you didn't already know, then a whole other movie you have watched before. In this movie, I have noticed the audience tends to be easily moved and emotional because of the raw and realness that this film presents which is important when making a film because connecting and engaging with the audience is one of the biggest factors for a good movie.
Familiar or unusual? Call me by Your Name is a movie many of you have never seen before or maybe even heard of. It's not common to see two characters of the same sex fall in love on screen making it rather unique and something that hasn't necessarily been done many times before. Luca Guadagnino simply just tells a breathtaking love story. This film creates the most beautiful visual of a romance movie. Timothee Chalamet’s performance could have made the movie on its own but the cinematography and incredible visuals top it all off. With little action in scenes, there’s no need for obnoxious unnecessary music or dialogue. Call Me By Your Name doesn't need background music or sound effects like you hear in other movies to make the audience feel a certain way. It does it on its own with little soundtrack. The way the film is set up and directed keeps the audience intrigued, along with real and raw moments Chalmet helps create for his character. Set in 1983, the luscious Italian countryside perfectly accommodated with the tone and storyline for the forbidden summer fling being unfolded. It’s triumphant and heartbreaking.
